Tips for giving a good speech in Public
Public speaking is very important for everyone in the world. Almost all the business person has studied Public Speaking because they think it’s a significant subject for them, and also it can make them even more successful in their career. Even though Public Speaking can help many people who work in many different kinds of jobs, but if they don’t know how to give an effective speech, it will be worth nothing. In order to give an effective speech, we must choose an interesting topic for audience, have clear voice projection, speaking with emotion, make audience involve with us, and use appropriate gesture.
Choosing topic for giving speech is very crucial. How good or how bad your speech is, will depend on your topic. There’re many different kinds of topics, but which one we should use, and which one we should not use. For example, you are going to give a speech in front of kids in school, should we choose a topic about science or planets? The answer will be NO for sure. If all of the audiences are kid, we must choose any topics that related to games, and other kind of stories to make them feel excited on our speech. Then, we will get full attention from our kid audience.
Besides choosing an interesting topic, it’s also important that we use an appropriate pronunciation and clear voice. People would want to listen to you if you speak with a correct enunciation and easy for them to hear or understand. Many public speakers have problem with this point, because nerves play a big part in the process. As we practice our speech in front of the mirror, or even face to face with your family, it won’t be the same as you speak in front of the audience. As I have noticed many public speakers in America or Australia while they are giving their speech in the graduation ceremony, stumbling might take place in some part of their speech at first, but as soon as they get used to it, their pronunciation or the clarity of their voice will start to gain.
Speaking with emotion also has a big role in public speaking. In Khmer New Year I always go to Kompong Soum especially relax on the beach. I usually go to Ou Cher Teal’s beach, so I could hear the wave of the ocean hit the coastline Woouuu Wooouuu. As you read from this text how would you feel? Very interesting right? In public speaking if we could do the same thing, we will get full attention from our audience. All for one speaking with emotion can really help your ways of delivery and also it makes your audience can feel what you’re talking.
Have you ever experienced that your boss gave his speech for an hour and the only thing you do is listen? Almost all public speakers face with this problem. To be successful in our speech we must get our audience involve with us by asking them a question. Asking a rhetorical question is a very good way to get your listener’s attention and also makes them to think about our speech. Do not force, do not point to your audience while asking a question but smile to get answer. Even though they do not know the answer to the question at least they try to think for the answer and try to memorize what we have said from the beginning of the speech.
Giving an effective speech by using appropriate gesture is very important for everyone who studies about Public Speaking. By using gesture you can make your audience completely engrossed in your speech. This method of speech delivery has been proved by many famous schools all over the world. As you can see from Adolf Hitler’s speech, he was an eloquent speaker. But the question is why Adolf Hitler has become a world famous speaker? If we watch his speech about the Nazi’s party, we could see his hands, his legs, all parts of his body was moving, and by giving a gesture he could persuade his audience to listen to him, and some even deeply involved in his speech.
All for all I want you to know and remember that if you don’t move then your audience will. Get your audience involve with you or they will fall a sleep. In public speaking we must speak with emotion to convince them to listen to us. Treat your audience as if you were in conversation, use your body to help express what you are saying. Choose the right the topic, so your audience won’t get bored.
