Graduation Speech

Good Morning teachers, parents, staffs and students! My name is Phou Laysun, a representative from ESP class, which is English for Specific Purpose. I’m so glad to be standing up here today. A day of delight, a day of happiness, and also it’s an unforgettable day. This is a really special time for everyone. We have worked so hard for a long time to get here and we have finally done it.

First of all I want to express my gratitude to his excellency Dr. Quach Mengly, the president of Aii (American Intercon Institute) and Ais (American Intercon School). Especially to all the teachers and staffs who are working so hard to promote this school and always come up with new activities like Field Trips, Checking Dictionary, Spelling Bee contest. I will never forget all of my teachers especially Mr. Roger Lee, and Mr. Mike Lay who had been teaching me for 4 terms.
Secondly I would like to express an appreciation to my parents, who gave me an opportunity to study in this school. One more special person is my sister, she always helps me to explain all the lessons that I don’t understand.
Honestly the first time I came into this school I didn’t really have much friends and my English was very bad and I couldn’t speak English at all even my writing, listening and grammar skills were low. Finally I overcame all these obstacles, so don’t you guys wonder, why I can get the best of it? The main reason is practicing. Have you ever heard of the phrase Practice makes perfect?
English is the most significant world language today. No language is used as broad as English. The number of people who speak English now go beyond 300 million. In most of the developing countries in Asia, particularly in Cambodia, English is the medium of training. They also translate famous English books into Khmer language. They know that the spread of knowledge and the progress of their countries in various fields, English is absolutely necessary or we can say that if you don’t know English, it’s like you loss your right hand. If you learn English, it makes you more employable in a variety of areas, as well as enhancing your cultural experience. Even in countries in which English is not the primary language, it is important to learn English for a number of reasons. For example, many people wish to learn English because they are hoping to visit or even live in an English-speaking country someday and others are hoping to work with a foreigner.
People always say learning English is very difficult. Do you guys have the same idea as them? For me I think learning English is not very difficult; just take it easy and study step by step. There are two main points that will help you to succeed in your English learning. They are planning to learn, and practice.
-Practice is a keyword to the success of learning English. You might be a very good learner, but learning English without practicing it will make you become a knowledgeable learner only, not an active user of English. Therefore, try to manage your time to practice what you have learned every day. It is only practicing regularly that makes you able to use English fluently and correctly. Especially for those people who have brothers and sisters, you can practice speaking English with them. It’s not a waste of time but benefits both of you.
-Planning, the last important point, relates to what are you going to do to improve your English. Where to go to learn? When to learn? How long to learn? Learning is however, not the last effort. What important is that you must practice it. Our brain is not like a computers brain. For a computer all we have to do is to Click then it will save everything for you even though you restart it. For our human brain before we go to bed our brain forgets half of the things we have seen and heard already, so can you imagine after we wake up, how many percents can we keep in our mind?
We must remember that we are the future of this country and this world, we must always look into cultivate ideas, goals, and aspirations to withstand our place, our home in society and the world. This past year has been a time of preparation as we embark on this long-journey. We must clutch onto our memories and all the things we have learned for they are substructure for our future. Before I end my speech please keep in your mind everybody; nothing in this world is permanent except for our knowledge. So keep doing the right things and never EVER give up!
